Photograph showing a post marking the position of the fissure at the rear of the Great Sphinx of Giza. The image was taken by an unknown photographer around 1925 and later published in Archives Lacau (2017).
The possible uncovering of this natural feature towards the end of the 16th century appears to have led contemporary visitors to speculate that it was an entrance through which ancient priests could enter the monument.
