The Great Sphinx of Giza Viewed from the North-East - Unknown Photographer (c.1925)

Photograph showing a post marking the position of the fissure at the rear of the Great Sphinx of Giza.  The image was taken by an unknown photographer around 1925 and later published in Archives Lacau (2017).

A post in the sand marks the location of the bedrock fissure across the back of the Sphinx

A post in the sandbank marks the position of the north-south limestone fissure running across the body of the Great Sphinx of Giza.

The possible uncovering of this natural feature towards the end of the 16th century appears to have led contemporary visitors to speculate that it was an entrance through which ancient priests could enter the monument.
