Despite a lack of direct evidence, Khafre, builder of the central pyramid at Giza, is most commonly identified by Egyptologists as the Pharaoh responsible for carving the Great Sphinx. This is based on the close physical relationship of the Sphinx to his funerary complex, a resemblance between his face and that of the Great Sphinx, and a partial inscription (now lost) mentioning his name on the Dream Stele of Thutmose IV.
