Illustration of the Great Sphinx of Giza based on sketches made during Napoleon’s Egyptian expedition (1798–1801), depicting the monument’s form and scale in its historical setting. At this time, most of the colossal body of the Great Sphinx was buried beneath the sand of the Giza Plateau.
